I’ve written a couple of articles on ‘wall to wall insetting’ here and here and I don’t want to sound repetitive on this subject, so I’ll discuss a few points that haven’t been covered yet. The first point that comes to mind: Is this a revenue stream that you are interested in pursuing?

It doesn’t have to be on your list of business services that are offered. There are plenty of other avenues to make money in custom rug making. So you need to ask yourself… “Is this for me? Do I want to be tackling the added challenges inherent to this service?”. It may or may not be ‘for you’. If it’s not, that’s fine, you’re better off focusing your attention on areas that interest you - maybe you would rather produce Fine Art Tapestries or focus on the Logo Rug Market or just make smaller scale area rugs that reflect a popular theme.

When I find myself involved with any on-site project that requires a custom installation - it’s usually connected to a local carpet dealer and they have a special request from a client.

When I go on-site, I’ll make a few suggestions and come up with some layout ideas, then once a design is agreed on, I’ll confirm all of my measurements and finalize my costs and do my best to sign the project.

Sometimes these homes are mansion-sized and require a lot of time and commitment simply because of the broad scope of the project. This can be kind of fun because most of us don’t really get to see too many mansions. It’s a whole different world!

If you are interested in pursuing this path, then don’t hesitate to start at the TOP. When you’re marketing yourself, you need to go ALL out and target the wealthiest neighborhoods, country clubs and hot spots.
